Digital Declutter for Summer: Clearing My Phone, Inbox, and Mind

I recently launched a brand-new YouTube Channel (cue the cheers!):
🎥 Blue Collar Direct Sales: Helping Everyday Consultants Build a Business They’re Proud of.

But… within a week, I ran into a major problem: I ran out of storage on my phone. 😩

What started as a storage scramble turned into something way more meaningful — a digital declutter that not only freed up memory on my phone, but also gave me more mental space. And let me tell you… it felt so good.

The first thing I tackled was the mess on my phone. Photos, apps, texts — it was all weighing me down. Here’s what I did:

I shifted thousands of photos and videos to Amazon Photos (it’s free with Prime!). Not only did I clear up a ton of storage, but Amazon’s photo platform also makes it easy to search and organize pictures—honestly, easier than scrolling endlessly on my phone.

My phone shows apps based on “most recently opened,” so I deleted the ones I hadn’t touched in months.
Hot tip: If you’ve set up an account in the app, you won’t lose your data even if it warns you. You can always redownload it later if needed!

Did you know all those pictures, videos, and GIFs from texts clog up your storage fast? I deleted old message threads, knowing I had already saved the important photos. I mean, we live in a world with a million photos—trust me, I won’t miss one!

I went from 4 cluttered pages to just 2 clean, organized screens by creating folders:

  • Travel: Maps, Tide Clock, VRBO
  • Food: Gluten-free apps, Wawa Rewards 😉
  • Social: Facebook, Instagram, Messenger
  • Finance: Bank apps, budgeting tools
  • Docs: Google Drive, Dropbox, Notes, Forms, etc.

And on my home screen, I kept just the essentials:

  • Bible App
  • Spotify
  • Camera
  • Weather
  • Calendar
  • Find My (because I am that mom!)
  • Libby (for library books on my Kindle)

It’s amazing how much peace comes from just seeing less.

Next up: the inbox. I try to do a deep clean once a year, and here’s how I make it less overwhelming:

  • Unsubscribe from emails I never read (especially the daily ones—girl, no thank you).
  • On my computer, I search for a company like “Old Navy,” then mass delete 50+ emails at a time.
  • I only keep what I actually want to read.

This step alone feels so freeing and liberating.

This was the final, unexpected layer of this decluttering journey.

I turned off unnecessary notifications, and whoa — I can’t even describe how much calmer my brain feels.

Here’s a truth bomb:
You do not have to respond to your phone the minute it buzzes.
You’re allowed to choose when you check it.

I even made a YouTube video about my 24-hour tech break, if you want to check it out.

One more thing: please don’t be that person at coffee who’s half-listening while checking their phone every 10 seconds. I recently had coffee with someone who did this the whole time and still said, “We should do this again!” …and I thought, “Yeah… I’m good, thanks.”

Your people deserve your full attention. The other notifications can wait. Don’t let someone “pull up a chair” into your conversation through a screen. It’s okay to set that boundary.

Feeling inspired? Here are 5 simple steps you can take right now:

  1. Delete 3 apps you haven’t used in months.
  2. Move your photos to Amazon Photos or Google Photos.
  3. Create 3 folders to organize your apps.
  4. Unsubscribe from 5 email lists that don’t bring you joy.
  5. Turn off notifications for anything that distracts you from being present.

You don’t have to wait until January 1st to “get organized.” Let this be your summer reset—a little space for your phone, your inbox, and your mind to breathe.

And if you need a little encouragement along the way, I’m cheering you on!
